    Introduction of ABS plastic

    ABS is acrylonitrile Acrylonitrile (23 ~ 41%), butadiene Butadiene (10 ~ 30%) and styrene Styrene (29 ~ 60%) three monomer copolymerization of polymer, the English name for Acrylonitrile-Butadiene - Styrene, referred to as ABS.

    ABS is manufactured by two methods: blending and grafting. Blending ABS was first developed by the American Rubber Company in 1945, while grafting ABS was first synthesised by the American Marbon Company in 1954. There are four types of synthetic ABS: medium impact, high impact, super high impact and heat resistant.

    The general ratio of the three monomers in ABS copolymers is 20:30:50. By changing the ratio of the three, the polymerisation method and the size of the particles, a range of ABS varieties with different impact strength and flow characteristics can be produced. For example, increasing the content of the butadiene component will increase the impact strength of ABS, but the hardness and fluidity will be reduced, and the strength and heat resistance will deteriorate. If the butadiene content of ABS reaches 50% or more, it is known as a high gum powder and is commonly used for toughening modifications of ABS and PC/ABS.

    ABS was originally developed on the basis of PS modification and has become a separate plastic species from PS due to its unique advantages of being tough, rigid and hard, its dosage is comparable to PS and its range of applications has far exceeded that of PS. In the early days ABS was classified as an engineering plastic, but with its rapid development, production quickly approached that of its parent PS, so from 2000 it was classified as a general purpose plastic and became the fifth largest general purpose plastic species.

    How to improve the heat resistance of ABS plastics?

    1. making the molecular model of the polymer frame into a three-dimensional structure, forming a mesh, thus inhibiting molecular movement.

    2. incorporating aromatic and alicyclic structures inside the molecular bodies which are difficult to move.

    3. adding polar groups to macromolecules so that the molecular structure is inhibited by the binding forces of hydrogen-oxygen chains, for example.

    4. Introducing crystal structures into the polymer structure to make heat-resistant modifications, using heat-resistant modifiers.

    Material properties of ABS plastics

    1. General properties

    Plastic ABS is non-toxic, odourless, with an ivory-coloured translucent appearance, or transparent granules or powder. Density is 1.05~1.18g/㎝3, shrinkage is 0.4%~0.9%, modulus of elasticity is 2Gpa, Poisson's ratio is 0.394, hygroscopicity is <1%, melting temperature is 217~237℃, thermal decomposition temperature is >250℃.

    2、Mechanical properties

    ABS has excellent mechanical properties, its impact strength is excellent, can be used at very low temperatures; plastic ABS has excellent wear resistance, good dimensional stability, and oil resistance, can be used for bearings under medium load and low speed.

  3、Thermal performance

    The heat deflection temperature of ABS is 93~118℃, and the product can be increased by about 10℃ after annealing treatment.

    4、Electrical properties

    Plastic ABS has good electrical insulation and is virtually unaffected by temperature, humidity and frequency, and can be used in most environments.

    5、Environmental properties

    ABS is not affected by water, inorganic salts, alkalis and acids, but is soluble in ketones, aldehydes and chlorinated hydrocarbons, and is subject to stress cracking by ice acetic acid and vegetable oils.
